If NASA can't afford to keep attempting contact with Opportunity...

Hackers / makers of the planet, time we take up the task?

(yes I'm aware how much of a monumental effort this would be)

signal boosts much appreciated, we're gonna need it ❀️

@grufwub wouldn't you need like a large radiowave antenna? I don't think you can just make one of those

@uint8_t @efi I mean, if they have any older satellites they've given up on we can probably ask permission to use them? Or hack them and ask for forgiveness :p

1

@efi there's old dis-used antennas around the world. Not in working condition right away, but maybe a start to work from? Or even current working ones, if people fancy contributing to a cause?

@grufwub I mean, I know you can lease time on the antennas, but idk if an open community can figure out a protocol to manage that without a central authority? like, I don't think space antennas have APIs lol
but maybe I'm wrong

@grufwub if someone else makes contact do they get to keep it

@grufwub Good idea : open source the abandoned-yet-working satellites, their tech and their API.

@grufwub the comms with Opportunity mostly depends on NASA's Mars-orbiting satellites or transmitting close to frequencies which are in use. So I'm not sure NASA would be too keen.

@grufwub Hey @thegibson, looks like another htown opportunity.
